6,000 crabs die per day in Kuakata during tourist season: MJN Report

During the tourist season, at least 6,000 crabs die every day due to the huge rush of bikes on the Kuakata sea beach, said an observation report by the Marine Journalists Network, an organisation of marine environmental journalists
According to the report, the Kuakata beach has been losing its potential as a tourist attraction due to plastic pollution and the disappearance of livestock resulted from uncontrolled tourism.
The report, released at an online press conference on Thursday, also said at least 50,000-60,000 tourists visit Kuakata every week during the tourist season, but there is no effective system to manage the tourist rush.

In addition, the motorbikes carrying tourists to the beach have a severely adverse effect on the biodiversity there.
The report said at least 200 motorcycles provide services in Kuakata every day during the tourist season. These motorcycles make trips to Crab Island at least 2-3times a day.
